The Best Canadian Animal Stories: Classic Tales by Master Storytellers The Vagabonds The Gilgul of Park Avenue The Commemerative
His book uniue attributes by separating their voices i think that young readers ages 5 and think that young readers ages 5 and would find this picture book uite pleasing Source 2015 AsianPacific American Awards for Literature s Jar is a fictional story about Juna who is Korean American Juna and her friend Hector go on adventures and use Juna s empty imchi jars to collect rocks and insects Hector moves away and Juna uses her imchi jar and imagination to help her cope with missing her friend She goes on adventures swimming deep into the ocean and to underwater caves swinging through the trees of the rain forest underwater caves swinging through the trees of the rain forest flying through the city on a giant cricket s back in search of Hector She is finally able to let go and make a new friend The watercolor illustrations are detailed and dreamlike clearly depicting Juna s emotions and imagination This picture book incorporates cross racial friendship and aspects of the Korean and Hispanic cultures the main character Juna the use of chopsticks and imchi jar Hector is Hispanic and lives with his abuelita While there are multicultural aspects the story is universal which makes it easy for all children to relate and make personal connections It is a heartwarming story about both new and ending friendships that primary students would enjoy reading I will never forget how upset my Kiddo was when her best friend moved away Both girls were only 4 and too young to realize what moving away would mean Naturally when it happened and the realization that she would never see Rhyanna again finally hit it was a pretty hard blow In fact she continued to look for her friend wherever we went for a few weeks My Kiddo finally did understand that her friend was not around or coming back but she s never forgotten those first lonely daysI was reminded of this time in my Kiddo s life when I picked up Juna s Jar to read Juna and Hector are also best friends and the two of them love to go adventuring in the park collecting things to put into Juna s big empty The Slave Dancer kimchi jar bugs rocks anything that catches their fancyBut one morning when Juna calls for Hector to come out and go adventuring in the park his grandmother tells her that Hector and his parents have moved away The two friends never got a chance to say good byeMissing her friend Juna begins to look for him in her dreams Each night theimchi jar becomes a source of adventure as Juna looks for Hector The first night with the help of a fish her brother Minho buys her the jar becomes a deep sea adventure the next night it s a jungle to explore with the help of a fast growing bean Minho gives her and finally a cricket takes Juna on an adventure to Hector s new house so she can see that he is doing well Juna is finally able to come to terms with not having Hector to play with any and opens herself up to the possibility of finding a new friendJuna s Jar is a charmingly told story that deals with the difficulties of losing a best friend at an age when ids don t fully understand how or why that can happen and of finally coming to terms with never having said good bye or closure making it a book that really fills a needJuna who is Korean and Hector who is Latino are both nicely portrayed diverse characters I like that though their cultural identities were obvious they weren t made a major part of the story so that the universal theme of friendship remained the focus And although a lot of ids may not Sleep with the Fishes know thatimchi is a Korean dish made with fermented vegetables and it is becoming a part of the American diet and this may open The Apache Wars: The Hunt for Geronimo, the Apache Kid, and the Captive Boy Who Started theLongest War in American History kids up to trying it And young readers may even want a big jar like Juna s to go adv. Ill on go on adventures with her Determined to find Hector Juna turns to her specialimchi jar for help each night She plunges into the depths of the ocean swings on vines through the jungle and flies through the night sky in search of her fr. Enturing withI thought Juna s older brother was also a very well done character He is a great example of a ind considerate sibling trying to help his younger sister deal with her friend moving away Juna s nighttime adventures are helped with a little magical realism that may confuse young readers and should definitely generate some conversation about reality and imagination Did Juna really go deep sea diving in Her Jar Or Did She Dream It The Difference Is jar or did she dream it The difference is in the wonderful watercolor illustrations by Felicia Hoshino where reality is clear and nighttime adventures are shouwn to be dreamlike but that may not register with the youngest readersJuna s Jar is a satisfying story about a young girl who s Jar is a satisfying story about a young girl who misses her friend and I wish it had been around when my Kiddo was youngThis book is recommended for readers age 3This book was provided to me by the publisher Lee Low Books This review was originally posted on Randomly Reading There are aspects of the books that seem like magical realism but the core story is a child missing her friend and learning to make peace with that and make new friends Juna s friendship with Hector is built on exploring new things while collecting things for her imchi jar When Hector moves away she doesn t even get to say goodbye So when her brother buys her a fish to cheer her up it can not take the place of Hector but it does trigger her mind to go on a fantastical adventure in her dream When the jar is too small for her goldfish she uses it in other ways each time that triggers such dreams and growing something beyond the jar Eventually Juna is able to see Hector in her dreams safe and sleeping beside the imchi jar she gave him and this frees her to be ready for making another friend I personally love this tale and the process of dream transformation in real life So while some may find this entirely fantastical I appreciate metaphor showing how Juna works through her unspoken anxiety about how Hector disappeared from her life However I also do think we do not have to always make light of heavy topics and there was a possibility lost of exploring open expression of Juna s loss but then again that may be someone else s story The idea that one can use their dreams to work through things is a very powerful one to me and children of 3 5 often have powerful dreams triggered by daily life and the mysteries of emotion they dont yet have language to fully explain always I have in fact asked my son at age 3 when he woke from a nightmare with a snake if the snake had said or done anything to him When he said no I told him the next time he dreamt to ask the snake why it was there or simply tell it to leave He woke the next day telling me he had done this and the snake left So while woke the next day telling me he had done this and the snake left So while story does make light of the deep loss experienced it honors the ability of children to use their senses and imaginations and play to work through their worlds Wondering where he is now Juna misses her friend Hector and their adventures after he moves away unexpectedly Her big brother Minho helps her cope with her loss by finding some uses for the large imchi jar she uses to collect things Each night she searches for Hector with the help of her friends a fish a bean plant and a cricket Each time the jar becomes empty the two find a way to fill it again The last page shows the best way to fill the emptiness left by a loss and the soft watercolor illustrations vividly show Juna in the midst of her everyday adventures and her nightly fantasies This picture book would be helpful in helping young readers deal with the losses in their own lives. Iend What Juna finds is that adventure and new friends can be found in the most unexpected places Coupled with dreamy watercolor illustrations by Felicia Hoshino Juna's Jar is a heartwarming and whimsical tale about the power of the imaginatio. Juna s Jar is a picture book about a STORY BETWEEN TWO BEST FRIENDS JUNA AND HECTOR WHO between two best friends Juna and Hector who from different cultural backgrounds Juna is of Korean background AS MADE APPARENT BY HER COLLECTION made apparent by her collection Setting Them Straight: You CAN Do Something About Bigotry and Homophobia in Your Life kimchi jars and how she addresses her big brother in Kor In this wonderfully written story we follow Juna s journey as she tries to cope with a friend moving away Juna always saves her families emptyimchi jars and now that her friend Hector is gone she has to come up with ideas about what to do with the jars on her own She gets a fish a plant and a grasshopper for her jar With every new thing she puts in the jar she goes on an adventure in her dreams One night she dreams of visiting Hector and she sees that he is happy and still using the imchi jar she gave him she wakes up at peace nowing her friend is okay That same day she takes an empty 100 ways to Fight the Flab - and still have wine and chocolate kimchi jar to the park and makes a new friend to have adventures with This is a story about a little a little girl named Juna her friend Hector and the different things they put in her emptyimchi jar One day Hector moves away without saying goodbye to Juna Not only does Juna wonder who she will play with now that her best friend has moved away but she also wonders what became of Hector She sets out to find her friend and is taken on several adventures with the help of her jar I made a text to self connection right away because I used to collect all types of things as a little girl and The Oxford New Greek Dictionary kept my treasures in baby food jars I became best friends with a girl I met in first grade and she began to collect items in jars too Eventually we had the same collections of buttons sand stickers glitter pebbles and just about anything else we could fit into those tiny jars My friend moved away when we were in fourth grade and eventually we lost touch I was really sad to have lost my best friend but I still have those little baby food jars filled with items that I don t need but can never part with Juna s Jar took me back to a time in my childhood that was as magical and innocent as the adventures Juna took each night Unlike many of Korean immigrants books this book has aimchi jar yet The Cello Suites : J.S. Bach, Pablo Casals, and the search for a Baroque masterpiece kimchi jar doesn t dominate Korean ness but serves a medium to portray a young Korean girl s friendship and imagination as a young person We need not so sad non immigration universal stories of Korean Asian people in the US and this book can contribute for that Too many sad voices in Korean diaspora literature so far because often it is written based on their own immigration experience or parentsgrandparents experiences Korean words here are authentic Cross cultural friendship with Hector and his abuelita are a positive side in the story Many of immigrantsids always hangout The New Job Security kids from the mainstream in previous Korean immigrants stories not otherids of minorities That is different in good ways Juna s Jar written by Jane Bahk is the AsianPacific American Award children s picture book winner I chose this book for a review of non print material using the AsianPacific American Awards for Literature website Juna s Jar is a heartwarming book about a girl named Juna who together with her friend Hector goes on adventures in the park and collects different things to place in her The Day Fidel Died: Cuba in the Age of Raúl, Obama, and the Rolling Stones (A Vintage Short) kimchi jar When Hector moves away Juna s longing for friendship is fulfilled by her dreamlike adventures in the most unexpected places Viewing this book in an audiovisual format made the warm colored illustrations and the events of magical realism come to life The narration was transparent it evoked emotions and drew me into the story The narrator gave the characters in Juna and her best friend Hector have many adventures together and they love to collect things in emptyimchi jars Then one day Hector unexpectedly moves away without having a chance to say good bye Juna is heartbroken and left to wonder who
